Injuries while sitting and working

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a syndrome incorporating several discrete conditions associated with activity-related arm pain such as edema, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, stenosing tenosynovitis, intersection syndrome, golfer’s elbow or medial epicondylitis, tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis, radial tunnel syndrome, and focal dystonia.

Treatments :

  • RSIs are assessed using a number of objective clinical measures. These include effort-based tests such as grip and pinch strength, diagnostic tests such as Finkelstein’s test for Dequervain’s tendinitis, Phalen’s Contortion, Tinel’s Percussion for carpal tunnel syndrome, and nerve conduction velocity tests that show nerve compression in the wrist. Various imaging techniques can also be used to show nerve compression such as x-ray for the wrist, and MRI for the thoracic outlet and cervico-brachial areas.
  • The most-often prescribed treatments for early-stage RSIs include drug therapies such as anti-inflammatory medications combined with passive forms of physical therapy such as rest, splinting, massage and the like. Low-grade RSIs can sometimes resolve themselves if treatments begin shortly after the onset of symptoms. However, some RSIs may require more aggressive intervention including surgery and can persist for years.
  • General exercise has been shown to decrease the risk of developing RSI. Doctors sometimes recommend that RSI sufferers engage in specific strengthening exercises, for example to improve sitting posture, reduce excessive kyphosis, and potentially thoracic outlet syndrome.
  • Modifications of posture and arm use (ergonomics) are often recommended.

5 great free PC tools I like.

1. CCleaner : piriform[dot]com

I have been using the free edition of this tool for last 8 years, which worked great for me. I keeps my laptop clean and fresh always. When ever I feel my mouse pointer is not moving as I expect , the immediate I do is a ccleaner analysis and execution.

“CCleaner is our system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!”

2. AVG Free edition: free[dot]avg[dot]com

I have been using this more than 10 years and the good thing I found with this tool is it won’t make the system over loaded with its operations. If you are a person who is good in keeping the basic discipline for preventing malware , virus etc. then is the best suited for you in your personal computer.

3. Ever note free edition :evernote[dot]com

This is a wonderfull tool to keep track of everything. It helps you to capture everything you want , a typed text, a screen shot ,a web clip, your daily diary , your personal expense accounts, your todo list, meeting minutes and a lot more. You can have different notebooks inside it and notes within those notebooks. A webclipper add in for the browser is also available for assisting the filing of web clips.

It has also a paid version without ad. It stores your note in cloud so you don’t lose any information even when your system got crashed. But you can edit it offline, and it will sync whenever there is a connection. It has mobile app version which will allow you to view and edit. My tab align the view in a decent layout.

Since it stores your personal information in cloud, I don’t recommend any security assurance even if I do trust for medium level secured information.

4. Team Viewer Free edition : TeamViewer[dot]com

Instant remote support – no need for any installation on the client side Remote maintenance – 24/7 access to remote computers and servers Remote access – access your data and applications – anytime, anywhere Home office – access your office computer from home.

This gives a lot of advantage at times we may need to access a computer somewhere else, it has an android app, so you can access your home pc from you tab.

5. Microsoft windows Live writer : Microsoft[dot]com

An easy to use tool for blogging. Even I used this simple tool to publish this small post. It has image watermarking feature that may help protect our picture.
